Who Was Dr. Samuel Hahnemann?
Dr. Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann was born on 10 April 1755 in Meissen, Saxony (present-day Germany). He was a physician, chemist, translator, and linguist who became the founder of homoeopathy.
He studied medicine at the University of Leipzig and later completed his medical degree at the University of Erlangen in 1779. Throughout his career, he became known for his dedication to scientific observation, careful case-taking, and a deep interest in improving patient care.
The Birth of Homoeopathy
While translating a medical text written by Scottish physician William Cullen, Dr. Hahnemann questioned some of the explanations regarding the action of cinchona bark, a treatment used for malaria at the time.
To investigate further, he conducted an experiment on himself by taking repeated doses of cinchona bark while healthy. He observed symptoms resembling malaria, which led him to develop the principle that substances capable of producing symptoms in healthy individuals may, under carefully prepared conditions, be used to treat similar symptoms in those who are ill.
This principle later became known as “Similia Similibus Curentur”, meaning “Let like be cured by like.”
